Visit with Our Senior Citizens.
For many of us, the holiday season means a time for celebrations, family gatherings and fun memories. However, for senior citizens living by themselves, in a nursing home facility or within Hospice care, the holidays can be a somewhat lonely time of the year.To alleviate this, many senior centers and organizations welcome volunteers to visit with and provide companionship for their residents. Whether it’s stopping by for a conversation or just offering a smile and a hand to hold, spending time with a senior for a few minutes or a few hours is an easy way to brighten their day or week. Simple gestures like this are often all it takes to show that, ‘someone cares.’
Other fun and easy ways to make the most of a visit can include playing games (who doesn’t love tic-tac-toe and bingo?!), reading aloud from a favorite book or magazine, or sharing stories from a recent trip or experience. Remember, it’s the simple acts of kindness like being a friend that can (sometimes unknowingly) make all the difference in another’s life. Many senior centers are often also on the look-out for individuals interested in leading an activity for their residents as well. If you’re talented in an area such as singing, crafting or playing an instrument, consider sharing this gift.
Below are a few organizations in service to senior citizens who would love to talk with you more about volunteer opportunities:
Hospice Care of South Carolina
Southern Care, Inc.
Have you volunteered at an organization similar to these dedicated to serving seniors?
Know of any others that would gladly welcome the support of volunteers?
Please comment and let us know.
Community is at the heart of what we do at DNA, and it always has been. To ring in this season of giving and to celebrate the organizations that continue to shape our great community, we will unveil a new way to give back every day that doesn’t necessarily involve cash. You may already give back in one or more of the ways that we list; if you do, pat yourself on the back. If not, maybe today is the day. Our hope is that you’ll never underestimate how much of a lasting and positive impact you can make…Not only for a cause, but for yourself as well.
