We Train Nonprofit Leaders

Shine the Light Nonprofit Forums Visit our Nonprofit Forums website is our annual series of educational workshops. Since 2010 our seminars in nonprofit management have included such topics as sustainable fundraising practices, strategic planning, branding, social media, public relations, and leadership development. Each session is designed exclusively for nonprofit professionals, executive directors and board members to learn about best practices and acquire the skills for operating a healthy nonprofit organization.

This year’s Shine the Light has been incredibly beneficial.  Specifically, the session on wellbeing and adaptability encouraged me to start staff meetings with a personal check-in, as well as collaboration with staff about self-care.  We are also incorporating a self-care section into our mentor newsletter.

David Taylor, Executive Director – Momentum Bike Clubs

Our board chair attended the Leadership Transitions and Organizational Sustainability session with me, and I have already seen her implementing some of Don Crocker’s ideas.  Don’s processes were helpful to me as well, as I think about my own position and how I can create a roadmap for others should I have to go on leave.  I even sent some of his information to a friend of mine who is on the board of a nonprofit in Georgia!
Jade Fountain, United Ministries
The last session, Storytelling was one of my favorites! I was very proud to learn that our organization does a great job at telling stories from everyone that represents our organization! Overall, I have truly enjoyed my experience with Shine the Light.  I have grown as a person and as a professional thanks to the tools that this forum has been able to provide me.
Debbra Alvarado, Hispanic Alliance
The Shine the Light presentation for emerging leaders definitely challenged my ideas/understandings and left me with action items for my own leadership growth – specifically reviewing my strengths and weaknesses and the way my values and personal mission inform my work. The follow up Booster Session was also really valuable. It allowed me to re-connect with contacts I made at the original session and also to have questions answered that came up after having a chance to better digest the information.
Kim Mahaffey, Communities in Schools
attended the Storytelling Shine the Light session led by Adrienne Burris and the subsequent booster session. This was without a doubt the most useful professional development training I went to last year! I went back to my office that day and immediately reworked our stories for our 2018 Impact Report to ensure we were creating dignity, not pity, and showing the power and strength of our clients. Then, only two weeks later, my COO asked me to share what I learned with our staff at our monthly all-staff meeting, I used the slides Adrienne emailed us and pared it down to fit in fifteen minutes of the absolute basics of what we need to work on as an organization. Sending one person to this training turned into impact on our entire 17-person staff! My Community Relations Manager even keeps a printed version of the slides on his wall to refer to when writing our story copy.

Shine the Light Nonprofit Forums have been invaluable for all levels of LiveWell Greenville’s Team.  The training series has afforded LiveWell Greenville’s Team with accessible, high quality, professional development.  Each of the four topics and presenters were professionals in respective fields.  The diverse topics allowed for ALL team members to attend, participate, learn and implement strategies pertinent to line of work.  For example: Executive Director benefitted greatly from Don Crocker’s topic on Leadership Transitions and Organizational Sustainability.  Additionally, another team member: Director of Partner Engagement learned and implemented tactics shared by Adrienne Burris with Build Your Storytelling Muscles.  An unique aspect about these forums are the booster sessions. Scheduled 4 weeks after the initial session, allows participants to follow up and ask presenters questions after experience with implementing the strategy for some time.

In addition, to the professional development, the networking among nonprofit leaders has been in valuable.  Connecting with other leaders and “emerging leaders” allows all levels of the nonprofit sector to network, learn and establish a community.
